Kevin Burgess - Associate Pastor Worship, Admin.
Email Kevin

I was born in 1975 and graduated from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK in 1997 with a degree in Environmental Safety.  I Graduated from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2011 with a Masters of Divinity.  Currently I am pursing Doctoral studies at MBTS.  In the summer of 2008 I studied Reformation history in Germany, Czech Rep., and Luxembourg.  In 2009 I wrote five essays in the field of ethics at the Jesus College of Oxford University over the moral use of deception in conflict situations of compromise. (Btw I am a non-conflicting complex normist.)  In the summer of 2010 I studied Early Church history in the biblical lands of Asia Minor which is today the country of Turkey.  I am married to Sharla Burgess and I have two boys, Canyon and Lochlan.

I am tenaciously (but not hyperly) Reformed as in the line of men such as Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Knox, John Bunyan (lots of Johns) John Newton John Henry....OPPS Matthew Henry, George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards, Adoniram Judson, William Carey, C.H. Spurgeon, A.W. Pink, R.C. Sproul, John Piper, John MacArthur, Al Mohler, Steve Lawson, Sinclair Ferguson...I think you get the picture.  Yes I am Reformed and Baptist.  This means keep the water away from the babies unless you need to bath them.  Of course some of the men in the list above are Presbyterian but that doesn't mean I have to be.  Padeobaptism (as well as church polity) are secondary issues so let us all have liberty and afford liberty in these areas.  Probably compared to most Baptists I am liberal (ohhhh!) on secondary issues (Rom. 14).  However, when you get to know me you will realize that on biblical essentials there is no one who demands more unity than I do.  Just remember “essentials-unity; non-essentials-liberty; all things-charity” and you will be welcome to come near me and discuss theology, doctrine, religion, heck even a little spirituality.

I read and study my Bible continually but I also enjoy reading the great papers of theological academia and Ancient Near Eastern texts. My favorite liberal author is John Shelby Spong.  But don’t go reading him if you are not grounded in the Word of God.  My favorite book of the Bible is the one I am studying.

DISLIKES: Not much on invitations because the gospel is proclamation not invitation. Creating your soteriology from parables in Matt. 22 and Luke 14 is a dangerous thing.  IT’S A PARABLE!  No such thing as “the sinners prayer” in the bible.  As I have said before and will say again, praying a prayer doesn’t make you a Christian like quacking doesn’t make you a duck.  You are either fooling others or fooling yourself.  No place will you find people “asking Jesus into their hearts.” Yea, Yea I know Eph. 3:12.  Read it again, Paul is talking to believers.  Nor does Jesus “knock on the door of your heart” and ask to be invited in.  I mean really!?  You think Rev. 3:20 is talking to lost people??  Ok I’m done.   I don’t like “bible studies” that are actually “book studies” unless you want to call your so called bible study a book study then I would be fine with that.  I certainly do not like people who use the body of Christ as a sorority or fraternity of a social club that they can come and go as they please.  Please read Bonheoffer's Life Together.  His discussion on miteinander and fureinander over against gegeneinander is absolutely fantastic!!!!  Besides that, read John 6:67, Rev. 3:16, etc.  Don’t like people who “quote” the bible but can’t tell you the address or simply qualify their statement by saying “the bible says…”.  The bible says don’t do this. Oops.  I don’t like it when a person will not change their position even when they have been shown their noetic system in based on irrationality.  MusTURD. Sweating in cold weather. Sitting in the window seat.  Arminian doctrine. OSU.  Tyranny of the ασθενων.

DOLIKES: People who will quote scripture when discussing theology.  And remember, anytime you say anything that has something to do with a belief system (or lack thereof), life and death, God, salvation, religion, church, “fate”, ect., you are dealing with some subtopic found under the title theology.  I do like when people question what I have to say.  It makes me have to expound the merits of my position.  Knowing the other side will always help you to see the error of your ways or it will help you to see the value of your argument.  I like when people ask questions.  I like it when two people disagree on something.  Although difficult I like Alvin Plantinga.  BBQ: If in the quah My Place, if in Norman then it’s Van’s Pig Stand.  Going to OU gymnastics meets and basketball games. Sleeping on my stomach, all of my family, working out.
